NATURE-BASED FLOOD RISK REDUCTION VIA MULTIPLE LINES OF DEFENSE

نویسندگان

چکیده

Sea level rise, land subsidence and population growth lead to steadily increasing flood risks in low-lying coastal areas. Hard defense structures such as dikes dams should be regularly heightened strengthened sustain their protective function. Further, hard can induce negative effects on the surrounding ecosystem. Therefore, nature-based approaches risk reduction are increasingly promoted. Vegetated foreshores (such salt marshes mangrove forests) reduce wave loads (Vuik et al., 2016). Furthermore, they able keep pace with sea rise due natural sediment accretion. However, cannot always exist front of defenses, for example because shipping lanes, protected habitats or harsh waves currents. Even situations, safety enhanced by creating between multiple lines (double dikes). In this study, we investigate effectiveness, costs protection benefits via defense.

Nationwide Flood Monitoring for Disaster Risk Reduction Using Multiple Satellite Data

As part of the contribution to flood disaster risk reduction, it is important to identify and characterize flood areas, locations, and durations. Multiple satellite-based flood mapping and monitoring are an imperative process and the fundamental part of risk assessment in disaster risk management. In this paper, the MODIS-derived synchronized floodwater index (SfWi) was used to detect the maxim...

Nature, Socioeconomics and Flood Mortality

We analyze mortality caused by 2,194 large flood events between 1985 and 2008 in 108 countries. Unlike previous studies that looked at naturaldisaster mortality, we find that year-to-year changes in income and institutional determinants of vulnerability do not affect flood mortality directly. Income and institutions influence mortality only indirectly, through their impact on the intensity and ...

Biodiversity recovery following delta-wide measures for flood risk reduction

Biodiversity declined markedly over the past 150 years, with the biodiversity loss in fluvial ecosystems exceeding the global average. River restoration now aims at flood safety while enhancing biodiversity and has had success locally. However, at the scale of large river distributaries, the recovery remained elusive. We quantify changes in biodiversity of protected and endangered species over ...

5. Chapter 5: Incentivising Flood Risk Adaptation through Risk-based Insurance Premiums - Trade- Offs between Affordability and Risk Reduction

The financial incentives offered by the risk-based pricing of insurance can stimulate policyholder adaptation to flood risk while potentially conflicting with affordability. We examine the trade-off between risk reduction and affordability in a model of public-private flood insurance in France and Germany estimating household flood adaptation decisions in response to financial insurance incenti...

Engineering and Design RISK-BASED ANALYSIS FOR FLOOD DAMAGE REDUCTION STUDIES

3. General. The procedures described herein lead to estimation of expected benefits of proposed flood damage reduction plans using risk and uncertainty analysis. Quantitative and qualitative methods of representing the likelihood and consequences of exceedance of the capacity of selected measures are also included. The procedures are generally an extension and expansion of the traditional plan ...
